Society of Creative Anachronism

Welcome to the Society of Creative Anachronism! Frequently guests at the Marché Moncton Market, this group is "dedicated to researching and recreating the Middle Ages (1600 AD) in the present ... its crafts, sciences, arts, traditions, and literature." Indeed, every aspect of "western" medieval life is explored, from everyday pursuits such as cooking, agriculture, clothing, and tool-making to more sophisticated endeavours such as archery, armoury, bardic recitation, bookbinding, calligraphy, drama, embroidery, heraldry, jewellery and lace-making, medicine, and musical instrument making to name but a few.

A worldwide organization gaining in numbers, the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) has a presence in many countries including Canada, U.S., England, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Romania, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, all encompassing their own territorial "kingdoms" – for example, the Kingdom of Lyndhaven is the Province of New Brunswick! A sizeable local following welcomes guests and new members with enthusiasm, and offers a wide range of interests and areas of expertise with something to appeal to everyone.

Founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California, with an experiment by author Marion Zimmer-Bradley, this society is now at least 24,000 members strong, with many casual or guest members who are not part of the paying and registered membership. Growing in scope over the years, this society offers a haven away from today’s hectic world of the modern era with all of its attendant stresses. It’s a great way to relax, have fun, learn and forge friendships, and create your own world. An alternate reality of sorts where every person can be a "king" or a "queen" for an afternoon, a day, or however long one wishes.

Periodically, the Society of Creative Anachronism meet at the Marché Moncton Market for Medieval Fashion Shows, demonstrations, such as fencing matches, and displays, such as weaponry and gorgeous costumes, including a 30-lb chain-mail, and a colourful map of the world according to the SCA.

For more information on the SCA, access their very modern website at http://www.sca.org (the local website is at http://lyndhaven.org/) and make your very own step back in time!
